LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers announced today that Lady Raider head coach Marsha Sharp has been awarded a five-year contract extension. Sharp recently completed her 19th season at Texas Tech and has led her last 12 teams to the NCAA Tournament.
"We are pleased to extend Marsha's contract through the 2006 season," Myers said. "She is one of the top basketball coaches in the nation and she has developed one of the top women's basketball programs in the nation. She should be compensated accordingly."
Sharp's contract will reflect an increase in base salary from $200,000 to $250,000 beginning September 1, 2001. Additionally, deferred income of $150,000 per year over the course of the extension has been added to the package and will be paid out at the conclusion of the 2006 season.
Recently named president of the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association, Sharp has established herself as one of the most respected coaches in the country, while compiling a career record of 459-141 in 19 years. She has led the Lady Raiders to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, including the last 12, and eight NCAA Sweet 16 and three Elite Eight appearances. Her 1993 squad won the NCAA National Championship, leading to her being named the National Coach of the Year.
Sharp also led the Lady Raiders to three-straight Big 12 Conference regular-season titles (1998-2000) and two tournament crowns (1998, 1999). While in the Southwest Conference, Sharp and the Lady Raiders never finished below third and won or shared the last five championships. Her teams captured three Southwest Conference Post-Season Classic titles.
A 1974 graduate of Wayland Baptist University, Sharp also was named the National Coach of the Year in 1994. She was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999. She also reaped SWC Coach of the Year honors seven times, five consecutively.
