LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Bryon Smith scored Gera Alvarez on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to give Texas Tech a 2-1 win over the Kansas Jayhawks before 3,476 fans at Dan Law Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 34-15-1 overall and 16-9-1 in the Big 12 and moves into third place in the league standings. Kansas is now 19-28 on the year and fell to 5-21 in the Big 12.
It turned out to be another pitcher's dual but this time the featured players were Pete Smart for Kansas and Chris Phillips for Tech. Phillips held the Jayhawks without a hit until the fourth inning while Smart was able to hold Tech scoreless through four innings. Tech jumped on the board first on an RBI double by freshman Brent Fossum that plated designated hitter Stephen Leist, who led off the inning with an infield single.
Phillips was able to hold Kansas scoreless through six innings before Jayhawks scored a run in the seventh to tie the game. Catcher Brent DelChiaro plated Jesse Gremminger with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Juniors Gera Alvarez and Nick Blankenship led off the bottom of the eighth inning with singles straight up the middle to put runners on first and third. Bryon Smith drove in the game winning run in the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Phillips (11-3) was able to preserve the win after setting down three straight Kansas batters in the top of the ninth. Phillips gave up just five hits and struckout six batters in nine innings of work to give him his sixth complete game of the year. Suffering the loss for Kansas was Pete Smart (8-3) who gave up two runs on 10 hits.
Texas Tech and Kansas will complete the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
