LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech completed its third week of spring workouts with a 2 ?-hour scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium.
The Red Raiders will work out Monday and Wednesday of next week before closing the spring schedule with the annual Red-Black Game on Sat., April 14, at Lowery Field at 7 p.m.
"The defense played well today. They gave a tremendous effort," Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach said. "The offense played in spurts.
"We need to be more consistent as a team," Leach added. "We traded blows the last two scrimmages. The offense last week, the defense this week."
The Red Raider defense posted eight sacks on the day and picked off three passes. Jonathan Hawkins recorded two of the sacks, while Byron Johnson and Marquis Turner grabbed two of the three interceptions.
"We (defense) made a step in the right direction today," said Greg McMackin, Red Raider associate head coach. "We played better fundamentally and tackled the run better. I was pleased with the effort we displayed today. We made plays."
Offensively, Kliff Kingsbury completed 21-of-35 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown. He also threw one interception. Junior college transfer Anton Paige grabbed six balls for 98 yards and a touchdown and turned in a long play of 45 yards to set up a Ricky Williams rushing touchdown.
