Tech Baseball Drops Iowa State In Saturday Doubleheader

LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Jason Rainey went 5 for 10 on the afternoon to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a doubleheader sweep of the Iowa State Cyclones before 6,137 fans at Dan Law Field on Saturday.
With the two wins, Texas Tech improves to 24-14 overall and 9-8 in the Big 12 and will take a 2-0 series lead into Sunday's final game. Iowa State dropped to 10-17 on the season and fell to 4-6 in the Big 12. The Saturday doubleheader was scheduled on Friday after severe storms moved through the Lubbock area to force the postponement.
Iowa State took control early in the first game as the Cyclones put up single runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Texas Tech finally responded to the Cyclone charge with a double to left center by Gera Alvarez and a two run home run by Tony Arnerich tied the game. The Red Raiders pulled away in the sixth inning off a three-run home run by Bryon Smith.
Texas Tech was able to force a run rule in the seventh as the squad put up seven runs off seven hits and a three-run home run by Gera Alvarez. Jason Rainey led all Tech batters going 3 for 5 at the plate while Bryon Smith knocked in a game-high four RBI. Senior Brandon Roberson (7-3) picked up his seventh win of the season while Alan Bomer fell to (3-4) with the loss.
Junior Chris Phillips (9-2) put forth another on the mound for Texas Tech in the second game of the day as he went the distance giving up eight hits, one walk and struckout six batters. The Tech offense didn't show any signs of letting down as the team picked up 12 hits and two more home runs to give Tech five homers on the day.
Texas Tech took control from the start by scoring four runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead to the top of the fourth. Iowa State was able to pull within two in the top of the fourth thanks to a solo home run by Rob Conway and an RBI single by Ryan Wickham. Texas Tech put up four more runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to complete its half of the scoring.
Rob Conway led the Iowa State offense in the second game going 3 for 4 at the plate and finished the day 5 for 7. Lincoln Mincks suffered the loss for Iowa State and fell to (2-2) on the season. Texas Tech and Iowa State will conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
