Baylor Evens Series With 2-1 Win

WACO, Texas - Kelly Shoppach hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning propelling the Baylor Bears to a 2-1 win over Texas Tech before 4,176 fans at Baylor Ballpark on Saturday night.
Baylor's win gives Tech a 38-16-1 overall record and 18-10-1 mark in the Big 12 and ties this crucial series at 1-1. With the win, Baylor improved to 35-19 overall and 17-9 in the league.
Tech scored its only run of the game in the first inning when Gera Alvarez hit an RBI double plating lead-off hitter Austin Cranford. Baylor tied the score in the bottom of the first when Chris Durbin hit an RBI single scoring Tim Hartshorn.
The next four innings of the game was a classic pitcher's dual as Tech's Chris Phillips and Baylor's Justin Taylor held both squads scoreless. Kelly Shoppach punched out the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when he hit a solo home run over the center field fence to give Baylor a 2-1 lead.
Baylor reliever Zane Carlson retired six of Tech's last seven batters earning him his seventh save of the season. Justin Taylor earned the win for Baylor and is now 7-2 on the season while Tech's Chris Phillips fell to 11-4.
Baylor and Texas Tech will play the rubber-match of the three-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of the game will earn the league's No. 2 seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament that begins on Wednesday at the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. Sunday's series finale will be televised on the Fox Sports Network (Fox Sports Southwest and Fox Sports Rocky Mountain).
