OKLAHOMA CITY - Senior first baseman Chad Landry went 4 for 5 at the plate and the Tech offense pounded out 18 hits giving the Red Raiders a 17-5 win over the Oklahoma Sooners in first round action at the 2001Big 12 Tournament at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
With the win, Texas Tech (40-16-1) earned its eighth 40+ win season over the last nine years and picked up its first win in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament since 1998. Oklahoma falls to 23-32-1 on the season and will face Texas in a 10 a.m. elimination game on Thursday morning.
Texas Tech relied on the bat of Chad Landry and the strong arm of Brandon Roberson to help carry the team into the next round of the tournament. Roberson, picked up his 10th straight win of the season and earned his fifth complete game of the 2001 campaign by scattering just seven hits and five runs over 9.0 innings. Chad Landry tallied his most complete game of the season going 4 for 5 at the plate and was just a triple short of hitting for the cycle. As an offense, all nine players picked up at least one hit and one RBI on the afternoon.
Oklahoma's Greg Dobbs gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he hit a two-run homer over the right field wall. Texas Tech answered in the bottom of the first scoring two runs on a two-RBI single by Nick Blankenship that plated Jason Rainey and Austin Cranford.
Tech broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth scoring five runs on six hits. The inning was highlighted by solo home run by Chad Landry. Texas Tech scored seven runs over the next two innings to give the Red Raiders the blowout victory. On the afternoon, Texas Tech collected four home runs setting a team record in the Big 12 Tournament.
Oklahoma was led by Greg Dobbs who went 3 for 4 at the plate with two home runs and three RBI. Brandon Roberson (13-3) was the victorious pitcher for Texas Tech while Rocky Cherry (8-8) suffered the loss for Oklahoma.
Texas Tech will play the Texas A&M Aggies at 5 p.m. on Thursday night in the second round action of the tournament. The Aggies defeated Texas 9-8 in the first game of the tournament for the right to advance to Friday's winners bracket game.
