LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Lady Raiders will tip-off the 2001-02 women's basketball season against Duke in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 11 in Durham, N.C., while nine teams highlight the schedule, including five Big 12 teams, that finished 2000-01 ranked in the top 25.
At the State Farm Tip-Off Classic, Tech will take on Duke, while Big 12 foe Oklahoma will face Purdue. The Blue Devils finished the 2000-01 season ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and eighth in the USA Today/ESPN Top 25 poll. The Lady Raiders will then continue on the road for the next three games. Tech will travel to Oregon State Nov. 24 and Oregon Nov. 26 and conclude at New Mexico on Nov. 30. The Lady Raiders will return home to face North Texas Dec. 2, Rice Dec. 5 and Southern Miss Dec. 16. Texas Tech will then head to the east coast to take on St. Peter's on Dec. 19 and Rutgers on Dec. 21. The Scarlet Knights concluded last season ranked 11th by AP and 17th by USA Today. Tech will come back to Lubbock to host Vanderbilt, who wrapped up 2000-01 ranked seventh by USA Today and 10th by AP, on Dec. 29, while Colorado will play Louisiana State on the same night at the United Spirit Arena. The Lady Raiders final non-conference game won't come until Feb. 17 as they host Wisconsin in the Big 12/Big Ten Challenge. The Badgers were ranked 24th in the final AP poll. Oklahoma will host Illinois in the other Big12/Big Ten Challenge game this season.
"I think it's going to be a schedule that is really going to test us and I think for this group (student-athletes) that is a good thing," said head coach Marsha Sharp. "I hope that they want to be one of the top 10 teams in the country and in order to be able to do that, you have to play good teams and win so it will be a challenge. I think this schedule will be the best thing for us to get ready for Big 12 play."
The Big 12 Conference schedule is still to be determined. Along with Tech, five other Big 12 schools finished last season ranked in the top 25: Oklahoma (seventh AP/10th USA Today), Iowa State (eighth AP/12th USA Today), Texas Tech (11th USA Today/13th AP), Colorado (20th AP/23rd USA Today), Missouri (19th USA Today) and Baylor (23rd AP).
"I have only seen one preseason poll so far for next year and four of the top 10 teams in the country were Big 12 teams," said Sharp. "They had us, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Baylor all in the top 10. I think that shows a little bit about how difficult it's going to be again in the conference. Not very many teams lost players out of the Big 12, so there is no question how strong the conference will be this year. I think it will be even stronger than it was a year ago."
Television games and times are yet to be determined.
