LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's 26 newcomers completed their first day of workouts Monday afternoon, after reporting to camp Friday. Monday's initial session was the first of two-straight days of two-a-day practices.
Red Raider head coach Mike Leach evaluated the first day of practice, noting that the newcomers got a little fatigued in the afternoon.
"Practice went well today for the first day," Leach said. "The guys got a little worn out at the end, but they stuck it out and worked hard. We have a pretty good group of guys to work with. We looked sharp during team drills toward the end of practice."
The team worked out in shells for both of today's sessions. The players split into respective groups for position drills at the start of practice and ended each session with a team workout.
Randall Cherry, a freshman defensive end from Celina, Texas, said he enjoyed the first day of practice, but has a lot to learn on the collegiate level.
"Today was fun, but it was hot in the bubble," Cherry said, referring to the first part of the afternoon practice being moved inside due to inclement weather. "I was one of the top players at my high school, but here, you have to start all over. The guys you face and practice with are much bigger and stronger than in high school. The college game is a big adjustment."
The Red Raiders will continue workouts Tuesday at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The varsity will report Tuesday from 2-4 p.m.
Notes from Day 1
Parle vous Francais: Junior college transfer Loliki Bongo-Wanga (Brussels, Belgium), whose primary language is French, broke down the running backs at the end of practice with his version of "1, 2, 3, Win!" Translated in French: Un, Deux, Trois, Gagner!
Ice Him Down: Being the only quarterback in the rookie camp, Cody Hodges (Hereford, Texas) took every snap during both workouts Monday.
Inside, Out: Tech resumed practice on the Jones SBC Stadium turf after a downpour and the threat of more rain forced the beginning of the afternoon practice indoors at the Athletic Training Center.
