LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech hit the field for its first full-squad practice as the varsity joined the newcomers for a single workout Thursday after on the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium.
"I thought we looked very good this afternoon for out first team practice," Red Raider Head Coach Mike Leach said. "Our guys worked hard, and the conditioning and training they went through during the summer looks like it has paid off."
The Red Raiders worked out in shells and focused the practice session on getting back into the normal workout routine. Center Toby Cecil (Richardson, Texas) noted that the team's summer conditioning program prepared him and the rest of the team for the first practice.
"Conditioning over the summer gave us a boost today," Cecil said. "We came out in the heat, worked out and got through it. I felt good and I thought we looked good. We look like we've working together all summer."
Leach got his first look at the quarterbacks and offensive line for the first time since the spring game and felt good about their progress.
"I thought the guys looked great today," Leach said. "The most important thing is that no one got close to them during team drills. The offensive line did a nice job this afternoon."
The Red Raiders return to business Friday with a pair of workouts at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Texas Tech opens the season against New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 8, at Jones SBC Stadium, before playing three straight on the road.
