LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach called Friday afternoon's practice the better of two workouts the Red Raiders held Friday on the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium. The Red Raiders went through their first two-a-day practice since the varsity joined the newcomers in a single workout on Thursday.
"We had a good practice this afternoon," Leach said. "We definitely looked better than this morning when we didn't finish strong. Fatigue seemed to set in a little this morning, but we bounced back and had a good workout."
Both workouts lasted a little over two hours as the Red Raiders worked in shoulder pads and helmets. Both drills featured work on position group fundamentals, inside drills, as well as pass skeleton and protection team periods.
A heavy emphasis in both practices was special teams. Music from Metallica in the morning session and "You Dropped the Bomb on Me" by The Gap Band in the second session blared from the sound system as assistant head coach and special team coordinator Manny Matsakis instructed the "Special Forces" via a wireless headset microphone.
The Red Raiders continue preseason drills with a pair of workouts on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The team will hold an intrasquad scrimmage at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. It will be the first workout in full gear.
Texas Tech opens the season against New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 8, at Jones SBC Stadium, before playing three straight on the road.
