Strasbourg, FRANCE - The Texas Tech women's basketball team defeated Racing Strasbourg, 73-65, to move to 3-0 on its European tour.
When the Lady Raiders took the court tonight, they saw a familiar face on the opposing team. Diane Caramanico, former University of Pennsylvania standout, currently plays with Racing Strasbourg. Caramanico faced Texas Tech this year when the Lady Raiders played Penn in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Lady Raiders, who have now played three of their six games scheduled during their time in Europe, were led in scoring by sophomore Jia Perkins for the second-straight night with 13 points. Senior Amber Tarr poured in 12 points, while sophomores Natalie Ritchie and Jolee Ayers added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Perkins also led the team in rebounds with nine and assists with eight. Ayers and senior Tanisha Ellison each grabbed six rebounds and senior Candi White dished out four assists. For the third-straight game, junior Jamie Nagle was the top shot blocker with two blocks.
On the night, Tech shot 42.4 percent from the field, connecting on 28 of 66 shot attempts. Tech also shot 35 percent from the three-point line (7-of-20) and 62.5 percent from the free throw line (10-of-16).
The Lady Raiders will face Lyon ALGM of Vetroz, Switzerland tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. local time.
Day 5
Today was started in Namur, Belgium. We did not have much time to look around, but it was fun being there. We all got up at about 7:30 to have breakfast and pack all of our belongings. We loaded everyone up and eventually took off after a mishap with a lost phone. Before we left, we went into town to look around and shop for about forty-five minutes. Most of us spent our money on lots of chocolate for which Belgium is famous and took pictures of the old fort on a hill. Afterwards, we finally got on the bus for our four-hour drive to Strasbourg.
While on the first part of the trip (we stopped for a bit in Luxembourg) most of us slept and/or listened to our cd players. We eventually got off the bus for a bite to eat and walk around. We did not see anything interesting on the stop. The second part of the trip we watched the Shawshank Redemption or slept. We finally got to Strasbourg and had pre-game (where we eat before the game) at the Hilton where we were to stay.
We soon left for the game to another 400 -degree gym to play our third game. After a bit of a struggle in the game, we finally pulled a victory over a really good team. The score was 73-65.
We are now in the process of showering and eating to get ready for our next trip to Switzerland, which Casey Jackson will share with you tomorrow.
Au revoir from Strasbourg,
Jamie Nagle
