LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football team concentrated two hours Sunday afternoon on a team scrimmage, dressing in full pads for the first time during preseason workouts.
A crowd of 400 fans donned the sidelines of the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium as the Red Raiders went through their first scrimmage session of the preseason. The scrimmage consisted of 84 plays and began with the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense squaring off. Also seeing action was the No. 1 offense against the No. 2 defense and the No. 3 offenses and defenses going head-to-head.
"We did a good job of controlling the ball on offense," Head Coach Mike Leach said. "We need to get better on penalties, but the offense did a good job of capitalizing on some of those. The defense did a pretty good job and is still putting its package together."
Leach recognized the play of the quarterbacks and running backs, but heaped praise on the offensive line.
"The strongest part of the day was the work of the offensive line," Leach said, "particularly in blocking and protecting the quarterbacks. They are beginning to develop.
"Both Kliff (Kingsbury) and B.J. (Symons) looked good and moved the ball well," Leach added. "Ricky (Williams) and Loliki (Bongo-Wanga) ran well."
Kingsbury finished the day with 78 yards and a passing touchdown on 7-of-13 passing, while Symons turned in 160 yards and two touchdown passes on 11-of-15 passing. King Scovell was the leading receiver with three catches for 76 yards. Carlos Francis led with four catches for 25 yards and a touchdown, while Wes Welker caught three balls for 35 yards. Nehemiah Glover caught one ball for 53 yards. Tray Haverty and Cole Roberts each had a touchdown reception.
Bongo-Wanga led all rushers with six carries and 48 yards, while Williams tallied 34 yards on six carries. Williams also scored a touchdown on the ground.
Defensively, junior college transfers Ricky Sailor and Josh Rangel each had three tackles. Ryan Aycock followed with six sacks. As a unit, the defense posted six sacks on the day.
The Red Raiders continue workouts on Monday with a single practice at 4 p.m. Two-a-days will resume on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Texas Tech opens the season against New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 8, at Jones SBC Stadium, before playing three straight on the road.
