LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football team returned to the practice field after taking the morning off and got a warm greeting from the blistering West Texas sun.
The Red Raiders practiced for a little over two hours in full pads getting both offensive and defensive units plenty of work. Most of the practice was geared toward individual position unit work on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Improving technique was perhaps the theme of the day as unit coaches worked extensively on footwork, blocking, pass break-ups, passing routes and defensive reads. The defense has received praise all week long from the coaching staff and that same praise was echoed again today.
"We're starting to play pretty good and make big plays," Tech defensive back B.J. Johnson said. "Defensively, we're doing a great job of running to the ball and we're starting to gain momentum. As a defense, we're starting to pick up the defensive philosophy and showing emotion."
The Red Raiders continue workouts on Thursday with practices at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Texas Tech opens the season against New Mexico at 7 p.m. on Sat., Sept. 8, at Jones SBC Stadium, before playing three straight on the road.
