LUBBOCK, Texas - Tonight's season opener is a first for the Texas Tech women's soccer program. The lights at R.P. Fuller Stadium were installed last spring, making this the first home game to be played at night for the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders are coming off a 4-14, 2-8 in the Big 12, season. Tech returns its top two scorers from last season in seniors Melanie Brosnahan and Carrie Graham. Brosnahan led the Red Raiders with seven goals and 16 points, while Graham recorded five goals and totaled 12 points. Also returning from last year's squad is senior keeper Brittney Peese. Peese became Tech's all-time saves leader last year as she tallied 84 saves, giving her 225 for her career. With six new freshmen and a sophomore transfer, newcomers look to make an immediate impact on the team. Highlighting this group of new talent is Roxanne Frilot. Frilot was named New Mexico Player of the Year as a senior.
The Horned Frogs are coming off a 10-9-1, 5-2 in the WAC, season. TCU is returning an 11 goal scorer in Sherry Dick. Dick started 12 of the 19 games she played in and totaled 23 points on the year. Other key returnees include juniors Lori Robbins, Brenda DeRose and sophomore keeper Shannon Wagner. Both Robbins and DeRose started in all 20 games for TCU last year while Wagner saw over 1700 minutes in goal recording six shutouts.
