Tech Soccer Falls to Tulsa 4-1
September 24, 2001 | Women's Soccer
The Red Raiders (2-5) managed only one goal against a suffocating Golden Hurricane defense as every time that Tech looked to get a comeback started, Tulsa was able to deny a clear shot. Tech had a golden opportunity to get on the board first when Lindsey Wile's shot hit the post and her follow up shot was high.
Tulsa (4-2-1) opened the scoring on a corner kick that found Beth Taruscio in front of the goal and scored into an empty net. Tulsa scored again in the 20th minute as Staci Morgan recorded the assist on Melissa McCormick's goal.
Trailing 2-0 with less than eight minutes left in the game, sophomore Rachel Mavris scored her first goal of the season. The goal was setup by Carrie Graham, as her shot from 20 yards out was not handled cleanly by the Tulsa goalkeeper and Mavris put the rebound into the back of the net.
"We played well today, we just gave away two goals and had some bad luck," said Tech soccer coach Felix Oskam of the loss. "If Wile's shot early on goes in the game could have been a different story."
Tulsa's Morgan and Melanie Beaulieu scored a pair of late goals to cap off the Golden Hurricane scoring for the day.
The Red Raiders open Big 12 Conference play this weekend with a pair of home games against Texas A&M and Texas. The Aggies will be in town Friday night for a 7 p.m. start, while the Longhorns will play at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
