LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp announced today the hiring of Melinda (Schmucker) Pharies as Director of Basketball Operations for the Lady Raiders.
Pharies replaces Elesha Walker, who graduated with a master's degree from Tech this spring and is now coaching at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
"I appreciate all Elesha has done for our program and wish her the best of luck in her coaching endeavors," said Sharp.
Pharies, a native of Nazareth, Texas, joins the staff after a stellar four-year career at Tech and a year as a student assistant during the 2000-01 season while finishing her degree.
"I am glad to be a part of this program," said Pharies. "I have been on the playing side of it and now I'm looking forward to the other side."
While at Texas Tech, she became the all-time career leader in assists (603) and started every game her last three years. Pharies was also an instrumental part in leading the Lady Raiders to three Big 12 regular-season titles and two Big 12 Tournament championships, while making the NCAA Tournament each year. She also set an NCAA Tournament single-game record for most assists in a game with 17 vs. Grambling in 1998.
"Obviously, Melinda brings a lot to the table - as she is so familiar with our program," said Sharp. "She will be a great help with our student-athletes and will work diligently in the organizational responsibilities of this position."
