No. 15/16 Texas Tech will take No. 11/13 Baylor on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 8:15 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena. It is the 50th meeting between the two schools.
The Lady Raiders
Texas Tech is 9-5 on the year and 1-3 in the Big 12 after losing at then No. 16/17 Texas, 87-83, in overtime last Sunday. The Lady Raiders are led in scoring by sophomore Jia Perkins at 16.1 points a game and sophomore Natalie Ritchie at 11.9. Senior Amber Tarr is averaging 11 points. Freshman Cisti Greenwalt is averaging 8.0 rebounds per outing, while Perkins is averaging 5.6. Perkins has team highs of 65 assists and 34 steals. Greenwalt is the top shot blocker with 34 blocks followed by sophomore Jolee Ayers with 12. Senior Tanisha Ellison is shooting 54.2 percent from the field and Ayers is shooting 46.2 percent, while Ritchie is shooting 39.1 percent from three-point range. On the year, the Lady Raiders are shooting 42 percent from the field, 36.2 percent from the three-point arc and 62 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Longhorns are 5-1 against ranked teams this season and are nudging their way toward the Top 10 for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
Texas trailed 53-40 early in the second half before clawing its way back into the game.
Tech had no answer in the second half for Texas' front-line duo as Stephens and Schreiber combined to score 16 of Texas' 18 points in overtime. Schreiber's three-point play put Texas up 72-69 on the first possession. Stephens then scored seven in a row.
After Schreiber's basket made it 83-80, Tech tried to set up a 3-pointer for Jia Perkins, who sent the game into overtime with a long shot in the final seconds.
Texas closed a double-team around Perkins, and she threw an errant pass that Schreiber picked off. Schreiber was fouled and made a pair of free throws to make it 85-80 with 17.2 seconds left.
Perkins led Texas Tech with 25 points.
First Three-Game Losing Skid Since '88-89
Texas Tech has hit its first three-game losing streak since the 1988-89 season. That season, Tech lost three games in a row at Brigham Young, 76-74 (Dec. 30), at Arkansas, 75-64 (Jan. 3), and at Rice, 83-65 (Jan. 7).
Perkins Gets Third Double-Double
Sophomore Jia Perkins recorded her third double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 assists at Texas.
Perkins Ties Career High Assists
Sophomore Jia Perkins tied her career-high 10 assists at Texas. Perkins has now dished out 10 assists three times in her career.
Stealing Candi
Senior Candi White tallied a career high of five steals in Tech's game at Texas. White's previous career high was four steals on three occasions.
Tech vs. Top 25
Texas Tech will play three-straight games against teams ranked in the top 25. Tech played at then No. 16/17 Texas last Sunday and will host No. 11/13 Baylor Wednesday and then play at No. 9/14 Iowa State on Saturday. After Iowa State, Tech will have played five of its lasts seven games against top 25 teams (Dec. 29 vs. No. 3 Vanderbilt and Jan. 5 vs. No. 3 Oklahoma).
NCAA Stats
As of games through Jan. 7, freshman Cisti Greenwalt ranks seventh in the country in blocked shots per game with a 3.0 average, among all NCAA Division I players. Sophomore Natalie Ritchie is tied for 36th in three-point field goals made per game at 2.7. As a team, Texas Tech ranks 14th in field goal percentage defense at 35.8, 35th in scoring defense at 59.2, 36th in scoring margin at 12.8 and tied for 38th in won-loss percentage at 75.0.
Fifth Largest Attendance at USA
Texas Tech had its fifth largest crowd for a women's basketball game at the United Spirit Arena against Oklahoma with 14,437 spectators. Tech has sold out (15,050) the USA twice against LSU Nov. 20, 1999 and against Oklahoma Feb. 19, 2000.
Jackson Ties Career High Boards
Sophomore Casey Jackson tied her career high of nine rebounds against Oklahoma. Jackson also had nine boards earlier this season at Duke.
