Last Time Out
(AP) - Amber Tarr scored 21 points and made five of No. 15 Texas Tech's school-record 12 3-pointers, leading the Lady Raiders past No. 14 Iowa State 78-66 last Saturday.
Natalie Ritchie added 17 points and hit four 3s for Texas Tech (11-5, 3-3 Big 12), which frustrated Iowa State's 6-foot-4 Angie Welle inside and burned the Cyclones' 2-3 zone from the 3-point line.
Iowa State (14-4, 2-4) was coming off an 82-66 victory over No. 3 Oklahoma, but lost for the second time in four home games after winning 26 straight on its own court.
Texas Tech, which had been shooting just 36 percent from 3-point range, made 12-of-21 from behind the arc. The old school record for 3s was 11, against Iowa State in the 1999 Big 12 tournament.
Welle led Iowa State with 26 points but was constantly harassed by Texas Tech's smaller, quicker defenders, who double- and triple-teamed her whenever she got the ball.
She finished with seven turnovers but had 15 rebounds, as did teammate Tracy Gahan. Lindsey Wilson scored 21 points for the Cyclones, who outrebounded Tech 45-29 but committed 20 turnovers and were 8-of-26 from 3-point range.
Jia Perkins, who scored 13 points, hit a 3-pointer and a spinning shot in the lane to cap a 12-0 run that put Texas Tech ahead 24-13. Iowa State missed eight straight shots in that span, and Texas Tech led the rest of the way.
Iowa State drew to 37-34 early in the second half on Welle's basket inside but got no closer. Tarr hit three 3-pointers, while Ritchie and Candi White each made one as Texas Tech built the lead to 58-42, big enough to withstand Iowa State's final threat.
Welle scored five straight points and Tracy Paustian hit a 3 to cut the lead to 58-51. Tech answered with an 11-1 run that included two baskets each by Perkins and Jolee Ayers for a 69-52 lead, and the Lady Raiders finished the game by making free throws.
Tarr Named Big 12 Player of the Week
Amber Tarr, a 6-0 senior guard, helped lead Texas Tech to victories over two top 15 teams last week. She averaged 18 points and four rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from the three-point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Against No. 11/13 Baylor, Tarr scored 15 points and added six rebounds, a season-high five assists and a career-high four steals as she shot 58.3 percent from the field. At No. 9/14 Iowa State, the Ozona, Texas, native led Tech with 21 points, connecting on 5-of-8 shot attempts, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Tarr shot 62.5 percent from the field, 71.4 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. Her season-high five three pointers helped Tech set a school record for most three-pointers in a game with 12.
