LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior third baseman Nick Blankenship hit a grand slam in the bottom of the third inning and the Red Raider offense pounded out 12 hits as Texas Tech completed a three-game sweep of the BYU Cougars with a 10-2 Saturday afternoon win.
Texas Tech (3-0) found itself in some trouble early in the game as BYU (0-3) starter Scott Koffman shut down the Red Raider offense the first two innings of the game. In the bottom of the third, junior right fielder Kevin Jordan broke Koffman's no-hitter with a double in the left field gap that scored Joel Buchenauer from first base. Koffman loaded the bases with two outs in the inning by walking John Slack and Austin Cranford. Senior Nick Blankenship cashed in on the golden opportunity by hitting his second career grand slam over the left field wall giving Tech a 5-2 lead.
The Red Raiders put the game on cruise control by scoring three runs in the next two innings to take an 8-2 lead into the top of the eighth. Senior Tyler Carson and John Slack each had RBI singles in the bottom of the eighth to give Tech the 10-2 win.
Junior Nathan Fouts improved to 1-0 on the season thanks to a solid performance from the mound as he struckout four batters and gave up just two runs in six innings of work. Scott Koffman took the loss for BYU and is 0-1 on the year after giving up six earned runs in four innings.
Texas Tech will hit the road next weekend (Feb. 1-3) for a three-game series with the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque, N.M. Friday's first-pitch is slated for 3 p.m. (CT).
