LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second consecutive week the Red Raider volleyball team returns home to face a tough conference foe after a disappointing loss on the road. Last week Tech forced a fifth game against the Kansas State Wildcats before falling, 3-2, only to respond with a 3-1 victory over the then-21st ranked Missouri Tigers. Wednesday night the Red Raiders were swept by a struggling Baylor team in Waco, Texas, and now return home to face the Texas Longhorns.
Tech (7-8, 2-4) has played well at home this season with its only two losses coming at the hands of #5 Nebraska and a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils. The Red Raiders will need to be at their best Saturday to have a chance to defeat a Longhorn team that is receiving votes in the USA Today/AVCA poll.
Texas (12-3, 5-2) is coming off a five-game win over #25 Texas A&M Wednesday night which extends its winning streak to five matches.
The Red Raiders will look to the conference's only two-time Player of the Week Melissa McGehee to get the team back on track. McGehee is second on the team in kills and leads all Tech players in double-doubles with seven. Sophomore Kelly Johnson is averaging 4.20 kills per game to lead the team and is one of two Red Raiders with over 200 kills on the season.
Saturday's match is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will follow the Lady Raider's first practice of the season. All fans attending the basketball practice are invited to stay for the volleyball match free of charge.
