SETTING THE SCENE
- Texas Tech and Missouri meet Sat., Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. in a Big 12 tilt at Jones SBC Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
- The game is the third Big 12 game of the season for both the Red Raiders and Tigers.
- Missouri holds a 2-1 advantage in the series. The Red Raiders won the initial game of the series in 1965, but have dropped the last two, both coming in Big 12 action. Mizzou took a 28-26 win in Lubbock during the 1998 season and a 34-7 victory over Tech in Columbia in 1999.
- The Red Raiders are coming off of a 31-17 loss at then-11th ranked Iowa State. The game against the Cyclones marked the fourth game this season against a ranked opponent. Missouri suffered a 24-13 setback at Nebraska over the weekend and has dropped two-straight Big 12 games to open the conference season.
- Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach and Missouri Head Coach Gary Pinkel are in their third and second seasons, respectively, at their schools. The two have never met on the field as head coaches.
- Texas Tech returns home this weekend for homecoming and the only home game for the Red Raiders during the month of October. Tech opened the month at Texas A&M, followed by a trip to Ames, Iowa. The Red Raiders close the month next week at Colorado.
THE RECORDS
Texas Tech - Texas Tech is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play. The Red Raiders dropped a 31-17 decision to then-No. 11 Iowa State in Ames over the weekend. Tech won it's Big 12 opener at Texas A&M two weeks ago.
Missouri - The Tigers have dropped their last two games and are 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 action this season. Missouri lost at Nebraska 24-13 last weekend.
TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH MIKE LEACH
Third-year head coach Mike Leach has a career-mark of 18-14, including this season's 4-3 record. Leach is 11-5 in two seasons on the turf of Jones SBC Stadium. During his first two seasons, Leach became the only coach in school history to guide his first two teams to postseason bowl berths and ranks second among Tech football coaches with 14 wins in his first two seasons.
MISSOURI HEAD COACH GARY PINKEL
Gary Pinkel is in his second season at Missouri and has a 7-10 overall mark at the school. Over the course of his head coaching career, Pinkel is 80-47-3 in his 12th season.
A LOOK BACK AT TEXAS TECH'S AND MISSOURI's LAST GAMES
Texas Tech - Texas Tech and Iowa State battled to a 3-3 halftime tie, before the Cyclones put 21 points on the board in the third quarter to run away from the Red Raiders and claim a 31-17 win in Ames. Tech passed for 272 yards and rushed for 189, but committed three turnovers, which led to two ISU touchdowns. Tech QB Kliff Kingsbury finished the game with 272 passing yards and a touchdown pass, while IR Wes Welker turned in 173 all-purpose yards.
Missouri - Missouri trailed Nebraska by one at the half, but went scoreless in the second half as the Huskers left with a 24-13 win in Lincoln over the weekend. Missouri held a 13-7 advantage in the second quarter until NU scored with :43 remaining in the half to take a one-point lead. Mizzou QB Brad Smith passed for 123 yards, while RB Zack Abron scored MU's lone touchdown on the team's first possession of the game.
RED RAIDERS 26TH IN THE LATEST SAGARIN RATINGS; SCHEDULE RANKED 4TH
The 4-3 Red Raiders are 26th in the latest Sagarin Ratings, updated through the games of Oct. 12. Texas Tech's schedule continues to be one of the toughest in the country and is ranked as the country's fourth-strongest. Only Southern California, Florida State and Stanford have stronger schedules than Texas Tech. Four of the Red Raiders' opponents are ranked in the top 10 of the latest Associated Press and Coaches polls, while three others are among the top 25.
FLUGENCE SETS BIG 12 TACKLES MARK; LEADS NATION
Senior All-American LB Lawrence Flugence made 21 stops against Iowa State and is averaging 17.4 tackles per game to lead the nation. He now has 429 career tackles, which ranks him as the Big 12's all-time leading tackler. He opened the season with a career-high 23 tackles at Ohio State and ranks second all-time at Tech and in the Big 12 with 423 career tackles. He has led the team in every game this season.
HEISMAN CANDIDATE APPROACHING 10,000-YARD MARK
Kingsbury is 182 yards away from becoming only the 19th Division I quarterback to pass for 10,000 yards in a career. Based on per game average, he should reach the mark this weekend.
