LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Kliff Kingsbury (New Braunfels, Texas) and receiver/punt returner Wes Welker (Oklahoma City, Okla.) were named Big 12 Conference Offensive and Special Teams players of the week, respectively, following their performances in the Red Raiders' 48-47 overtime win at Texas A&M.
Kingsbury, also named The Sporting News National Player of the Week, blistered the Texas A&M defense for 474 yards and five touchdowns on an amazing 49-of-59 passing in leading Texas Tech to the come-from-behind win in College Station. Kingsbury completed 83 percent of his passes and, at one point, completed 14 straight passes. Kingsbury also won the honor last week and shares this week's award with Texas A&M quarterback Dustin Long.
Welker returned six punts for 166 yards and a touchdown at Texas A&M. His 88-yard jaunt for the score was the longest punt return ever allowed by an Aggie team. Welker also amassed a career-high 327 all-purpose yards, including 120 receiving yards.
The Red Raiders play their third-consecutive road game at #11 Iowa State Sat., Oct. 12, in Ames, Iowa. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) kickoff and will be televised nationally on TBS/Superstation.
