LUBBOCK, Texas - The records continue to fall for Texas Tech quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Kliff Kingsbury (New Braunfels, Texas). The senior signal-caller enters this weekend's game at Iowa State with 50 records to his credit.
Encompassed in the 50 records are 37 school records, 12 Big 12 Conference marks and one NCAA record, established against Texas A&M last weekend. Kingsbury connected on 49-of-59 passes for a completion percentage of 83.05, which breaks the old record of 83.02 percent, set by Kentucky's Tim Couch against Vanderbilt Nov. 14, 1998. Ironically, Red Raider head coach Mike Leach was the quarterbacks coach at UK when Couch connected on 44-of-53 passes against the Commodores.
Kingsbury also is approaching five other NCAA marks, including career plays per game, career plays, most seasons with 3,000 yards passing, career pass attempts and career pass completions.
Among the Big 12 records, Kingsbury set two against the Aggies - passing yardage (474) and pass completions (59). He also holds marks in career and single-season touchdown passes, single-season and career passing yardage, and single-season and career pass completions to name a few.
Kingsbury established school marks against Texas A&M as well, breaking his own single-game records of completions, completion percentage, passing yards and passing game for a senior.
In addition to being named The Sporting News National Player of the Week, Kingsbury also was named Rivals.com and CollegeFootballNews.com National Player of the Week. Kingsbury blistered the Texas A&M defense for 474 yards and five touchdowns while orchestrating Texas Tech's 48-47 come-from-behind win in College Station.
Kingsbury and Red Raiders play their third-consecutive road game at #11 Iowa State Sat., Oct. 12, in Ames, Iowa. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) kickoff and will be televised nationally on TBS/Superstation.
