LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech football team joined the national rankings today for the first time since the 1998 season. The Red Raiders rank No. 23 in the ESPN/Coaches Top 25 Poll and No. 24 by the Associated Press.
Texas Tech dropped No. 3/4 Texas yesterday in a 42-38 shootout at Jones SBC Stadium in front of a season-high 52,047 fans and an ABC television audience. The win over Texas is without question one of the biggest games in Texas Tech history as the Longhorns are the highest rated team that Tech has defeated in school history.
Texas Tech was ranked No. 25 back in 1998 but a 17-10 loss to No. 8 Texas A&M dropped the Red Raiders from the national polls. Two weeks prior to the A&M game that season, the Red Raiders had achieved a No. 22 ranking after starting the season at 6-0.
Texas Tech will travel to Norman, Okla. this weekend for a showdown with the No. 5/5 Oklahoma Sooners. The winner of Saturday's game wins the Big 12 South Division and will play in the Big 12 Championship game in Houston on Dec. 7
