Grant Named Big 12 Rookie of the Week

DALLAS - Texas Tech's Erin Grant was selected Big 12 Rookie of the Week and Kansas State's Kendra Wecker was named Big 12 Women's Basketball Player of the Week and by a media panel, the conference office announced Monday.
Freshman Erin Grant has made her presence known in her first collegiate action. She has started the two games at point guard for the Lady Raiders and is averaging 10 assists a game. In her first collegiate game against Louisiana Tech, she scored 13 points and dished out six assists. In the home opener against Washington, she dished out a career-high 14 assists, which is a Tech freshman record, and was just three shy of tying the school record of 17, and added six points. For the two games, the Arlington, Texas, native averaged 9.5 points and 10 assists, while shooting 66.7 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free throw line.
Wecker, a 5-11 sophomore forward, averaged 22.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 35.2 minutes per game in four outings. Shot 52.9 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range and 1.000 (11-11) from the free-throw line. The Marysville, Kan., native leads the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding and free-throw shooting. She shot 50 percent or better from the field in three of the four games and from three-point range twice. Wecker was named MVP of the WNIT Tournament after helping Kansas State win the tournament with an 88-66 win over No. 14 Penn State. In the championship game, she scored a career-high and game-high 26 points, grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and dished three assists. She was 12-of-21 from the field and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
