Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-3)
At Lone Star Classic
MORE TOURNAMENT ACTION AHEAD FOR TECH
The Texas Tech Red Raiders will try and regroup after last week's 1-2 performance at the Astros College Classic as the 2002 Lone Star Classic awaits them this weekend in Round Rock. The Red Raiders, a team that played five games in seven days last week, will take full advantage of some days off before facing Houston in the opening game at the tournament being held at Dell Diamond. The Lone Star Classic will be Tech's first-ever appearance at the Dell Diamond which is the home of the Double A Round Rock Express.
At 6-3 overall, the Red Raiders are eagerly looking towards this tournament not only for RPI reasons but to wash away the bad taste left their mouths at last week's tournament in Houston. Texas Tech opened the Astros College Classic with a 10-inning win over TCU but fell victim to errors and lost to Louisiana-Lafayette 4-3 and then was rolled over by No. 11 Rice 17-4 on Saturday.
Texas Tech opens up the 2002 Lone Star Classic with a 5 p.m. match-up with Houston on Friday night and will then play TCU on Saturday at noon. Tech will close out the tournament with a noon battle with tournament host Southwest Texas. A three-day tournament pass is $15 for adults and $8 for students. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices at Dell Diamond or by calling the Southwest Texas Athletic Ticket office at 1-877-SWT-CATS.
TEXAS TECH AT A GLANCE
- Texas Tech now stands at 6-3 on the season after going 1-2 this past weekend at the Astros College Classic.
- Texas Tech head coach Larry Hays will coach in his 900th career game as a Red Raider in the first game of the Lone Star Classic against the Houston Cougars. Hays has an overall record of 22-13 against the Cougars.
- Chris Phillips moved into a tie for 9th place on the all-time complete game list at Texas Tech after he pitched his second complete game of the season against TCU last Thursday. Phillip's tossed 10 innings against the Frogs which tied his career record for number of innings pitched that he set against Texas last season.
- Senior Nick Blankenship made his debut at third base in the final game of the Astros College Classic. Blankenship moved into the lineup defensively in Houston playing the first two games at first base. Prior to last week's tournament, Blankenship had played all five games as the designated hitter.
- Senior shortstop Gera Alvarez is just four hits away from reaching the 100th hit of his career.
- Tech's 17-4 loss to Rice on Saturday was the worst defeat since Oklahoma dropped Tech 15-1 on 4/24/98. The 17 runs was the most given up since New Mexico State scored 23 on 2/5/2000.
