Phoenix, Ariz. - The Red Raiders scattered seven hits and stranded nine base-runners Saturday morning as #24 UMass downed Tech 7-1 in the third game of the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz.
The Minutewomen (3-0) built a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first as they sent nine players to the plate getting four hits. UMass would add one run in each of the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings to secure its third win of the season.
Tech (3-5) had several chances to make a run to get back in the game but could not come up with a clutch hit. Senior Carmen Grindell led off the second inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded there.
The Tech third would provide the lone Red Raider run as Eva Harshman and Tracy Cartier singled to start the inning. With one out Rebecca Eimen's single loaded the bases. Shortstop Kristi Robles flew-out to right scoring Harshman, but that is all the damage that would be done.
In the fourth the Red Raiders would threaten again as Jana Baker had a leadoff double to the left-centerfield gap. After a pair of walks to Harshman and Cartier Tech had the bases loaded, but failed to score.
Tech's last real challenge came in the sixth when Andrea Joachims walked to lead off the inning followed by Baker's second hit of the day and a passes ball the scarlet and black had second and third with no outs but could not manage to get anyone home.
Tech will be back in action later in the afternoon when it takes on tournament host and the eighth ranked Arizona State Sundevils at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
