LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior Nick Blankenship tallied seven RBI and Jon Slack set a Texas Tech school record with six runs scored to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 17-6 win over Sam Houston State on Wednesday afternoon at Dan Law Field.
With the win, Texas Tech improves to 18-9 on the season while Sam Houston State falls to 9-10.
Senior Nick Blankenship continued his record setting season on Wednesday as he became the first player to tally seven or more RBI since Jon Grimes picked up nine against Baylor on March 23, 1984. Blankenship earned his 45th RBI on the afternoon and also notched his 10th home run of the season that equals his count from last season.
Junior Jon Slack also got a piece of the record books today as he became the first player in Texas Tech baseball history to score six runs in a game. Slack went 4-for-5 at the plate with six runs scored and three RBI.
Texas Tech jumped out early taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBI single by Willie Durazo, Gera Alvarez and Blankenship. Texas Tech took a 10-1 lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before allowing Sam Houston State to rally. The Bearkats scored five runs in the top half of the seventh but the rally didn't last as Tech responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 14-6 lead into the eighth.
Lubbock Monterey product Dusty Buck picked up his third win of the season after tossing six innings allowing nine hits and six earned runs. Daniel Stringer suffered the loss for Sam Houston State and fell to 0-3 on the year.
Texas Tech heads back into Big 12 Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. First pitch on Friday afternoon is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. NOTE: Sunday's game time has been changed from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m. (CT).
