DALLAS, Texas - Texas Tech junior outfielder Scooter Jordan of Rowlett, Texas, and co-winners pitchers sophomore Aaron Marsden of Nebraska via Grand Forks, N.D., and Texas junior Brad Halsey of Houston, Texas, have been tabbed as Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and Pitchers of the Week, respectively, in voting by a select panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played from Mar. 11-17.
Jordan batted .667 (12-for-18) in five games for the Red Raiders last week as Tech took a pair of road encounters on the road at Oklahoma State in Big 12 play. He scored eight runs, drove in another eight runs, was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases, notched a .944 slugging percentage with 17 total bases, walked five times, executed four sacrifice hits, and had a 1.000 fielding percentage on 10 tries afield. The junior outfielder set the tone for the weekend wins at OSU by going 5-for-8 (.625) in the first two contests.
Marsden, the fourth Big 12 pitcher to be honored as Quad-National Player of the Week by COLLEGIATE BASEBALL magazine, fired a one-hitter over eight innings (complete game called by Big 12's 10-run rule on the final game of a conference series) in a 10-0 triumph to complete a sweep over Texas A&M. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter in his first Division I start while allowing only a second inning single to the Aggies' Rusty Meyer. His performance capped a weekend where Nebraska hurlers allowed only one earned run in 25 innings of work.
Halsey was equally-impressive with a 13-strikeout, two-hitter on unfriendly ground in Columbia, Mo., as the Longhorns downed the Missouri Tigers 15-0. It was the first complete game shutout by a Texas pitcher since Justin Simmons on Apr. 15, 2001, against Mizzou, and the Tigers had not been blanked by an opposing pitcher since that date. Halsey allowed just two singles and tied the UT game high for strikeouts in 2002 along with Ray Clark, who fanned 13 vs. Winthrop on March 5 at Austin.
