LINCOLN, Neb. - Shane Komine struckout nine and held the Tech offense to one run on five hits to lead No. 13 Nebraska to a 3-1 win over No. 23 Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at Haymarket Park.
With the loss, Texas Tech falls to 20-11 overall and 4-6 in the Big 12 while Nebraska improves to 13-6 and 5-2 in the league.
Nebraska took advantage of a first play error by Tech shortstop Gera Alvarez as the Huskers took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Matt Hopper that plated Jeff Leise from third base. Alvarez had what appeared to be a routine groundout by Leise to start the game but instead the ball went off his glove and into shallow center field.
The Huskers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on three walks by Tech starter Nathan Fouts and a two-out RBI single by Jeff Leise.
Nebraska took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Daniel Bruce that plated Brandon Eymann who reached on a leadoff walk.
Tech shortstop Gera Alvarez got a one-out single in the top of the seventh inning to give him a career-high 12-game hitting streak.
Senior designated hitter Nick Blankenship plated Tech's only run of the game when he connected on a solo home run that went over the left-center field wall. The home run is Blankenship's 12th of the season and keeps Tech's streak of 12 straight games in which the team has hit at least one home run.
Nebraska All-American Shane Komine (5-0) kept the Tech offense at bay all afternoon long as the senior right hander held Tech to just five hits and struckout nine. Nathan Fouts (5-3) suffered the loss for Texas Tech after surrendering two earned runs on four hits and four walks.
The Red Raiders and Huskers will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday's game was moved due to approaching inclement weather.
