ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Texas Tech used timely hitting, solid defense and good pitching as it won the first two games of a three-game series with the University of New Mexico Tuesday afternoon at Lobo Field in Albuquerque, N.M.
Tech (10-14) opened a 2-0 lead on the Lobos in the fourth as Rebecca Eimen led off with a single and advanced to second when the UNM second basemen could not handle the throw on an attempted sac bunt by Kristi Robles. Carmen Grindell followed with a single setting up Jana Baker's two-RBI single.
UNM (4-9-1) closed the gap to 2-1 in the fifth when Sabrina Sandberg hit a leadoff homerun to center but that would be all the runs the Lobos would score.
Kristina Blair started the game going four innings allowing the lone UNM run while Amie Stines finished the game recording a career high of five strikeouts in notching her second win of the season.
In the first game of the day Tech exploded for nine hits over the final three innings to break open a 1-1 game and win its ninth of the season.
Tech completed the come back in the sixth inning with four consecutive singles as with one out Grindell recorded her second hit of the game followed by the first of two Andrea Joachims hits. Eva Harshman's single to left plated both Grindell and Joachims as the ball found its way past the Lobo fielder and catcher Lisa Lawler capped off the hit brigade.
In the seventh leading 4-1, the Red Raiders tacked on two more runs as Eimen singled and scored on a two-out double by Joachims. The double also plated Grindell who had who had singled and stolen second.
The Lobos open the scoring with a solo homer in the in the first inning as Brooke Chaffee drove the ball over the left-centerfield fence.
Tech would answer in the top of the fifth as Tracy Cartier recorded her second hit of the game a double to the gap in left-center. Esmerelda Perez hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error scoring Cartier to tie the game at 1.
In going 2.1 innings in relief, Blair earned her fifth win of the season.
