LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson announced the hiring of assistant coach Shawn Garus today. Garus comes to the hub city after a four-year stint at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Last season he coached the Mountain Lions to a 22-9 record and their first-ever regional ranking.
"He is a great addition to this program and brings a solid background with him," commented Nelson on the newest addition to the volleyball program.
Prior to his three seasons as at the helm and one season as the assistant coach at UCCS, the 31-year old played on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour where he was ranked No. 1 by the Colorado Professional Volleyball Association.
His collegiate career spanned four years at Cal-State San Bernardino, where he earned his bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1995.
"I am very excited to be given the opportunity to coach at this level and against this level of talent," said Garus. "It is a great opportunity to be an assistant with an established program and an established coach."
The Pasadena, Calif., native and his wife, the former Cindy Bench of Lake Arrowhead, Calif., have a two-month old daughter, Emily.
