LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech volleyball coach Jeff Nelson announced today the signing of Breanna Pursley and Christina Miller to National Letters of Intent for the 2002 volleyball season.
Pursley, a five-foot-10 inch outside hitter from Tempe, Ariz., played both volleyball and basketball at Corona Del Sol High School which has a long tradition of success in volleyball. She is a standout two-sport athlete as she earned first-team all-state honors in both volleyball and basketball as a senior as well as helping to lead her team to a state title in basketball last year and trip to the state finals this season.
"[Breanna] should be a great fit for our system," stated Nelson. "She is a tremendous talent in both basketball and volleyball and we are real happy she chose to play volleyball for us. She has great footwork and arm swing, I expect her to step in and compete for playing time right away."
A standout for Lubbock Coronado, Miller was named first-team all-district, all-city and team MVP as a senior. Nelson feels like the six-foot middle blocker could step in and play right away.
"[Miller] is a fast and explosive player that can help right away," commented Nelson. "She will fit right in here, she moves her hands at the net well and I expect her to see significant playing time as a freshman."
"I chose to sign with Tech because I like the school and it has a good volleyball program," commented Miller. "It is really exciting to be able to play so close to home so that my parents can watch me play."
Nelson is excited about the addition of both these players to his team that has advanced to the NCAAs in each of the last two seasons, but is especially pleased to be able to sign a local player, in Miller.
"It is always great to get these local players," noted Nelson who already has one local talent on the team in Angela Mooney.
