LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings and Ryan Baty went 4 for 5 to lead the Jayhawks to a 14-3 win over Texas Tech on Friday night in the first game of a three-game Big 12 series at Hoglund Ballpark.
The loss drops Texas Tech to 25-16 on the season and 8-11 in Big 12 play. The win moves Kansas to 16-15 on the year and 3-10 in the Big 12.
Junior right fielder Travis McElroy, making his first career start, got Texas Tech on the board in the top of the second inning with a solo home run that went 400 feet over dead center. Texas Tech tacked on two more runs in the inning on a fielding error by shortstop Brandon Shepard and a sacrifice fly by junior left fielder Scooter Jordan.
Kansas got a single run in the bottom of the second when Tech third baseman Jake Brown tried to get a fielder's choice at second base but instead the ball fell out of the glove of second baseman Joel Buchenauer allowing Casey Spanish to score from second. Spanish got a one out single and got to second on a single by Cole Armstrong in the next at-bat.
The Jayhawks scored five runs in the bottom of the third on four hits, a catcher's interference call on Willie Durazo and a hit-by-pitch by Tech starter Chris Phillips. Matt Harbin came in to replace Phillips in the inning marking the shortest outing by Phillips in his Texas Tech career. Phillips' previous low was a 3 1/3-inning start against Cal-State Northridge on Feb. 10 of last season.
Kansas added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth on a double by Ryan Baty that plated Matt Tribble from first who drew a leadoff walk. Ryan Klocksien drove in Baty from second with a single to left center field and was able to advance to second on the throw in from center fielder Jon Slack. Cole Armstrong deal the Red Raiders even more damage as he got a two-RBI single to left center which gave the Jayhawks a 10-3 lead.
Chris Phillips (4-3) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he gave up five earned runs on six hits and a hit batter in just two innings of work. Jeff Davis (5-1) picked up the win for Kansas as he pitched his second straight complete game allowing nine hits and one earned run.
