Nelson to Coach USA Select Team in Croatia

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head volleyball coach Jeff Nelson will head oversees tomorrow where he will serve as one of the coaches for the USA Select team at the Spring Cup in Porec, Croatia. The event is set to begin May 12 and run through May 18.
"This will be a great experience," Nelson said. "I'm looking forward to the high level of play. There will be a lot of great ball from around the world. We have great players making this trip and I think it is awesome that we have two former players competing as well."
In addition to Nelson, two former Red Raiders also will be making the trip as members of the USA teams. Former Texas Tech All-American Colleen Smith and former All-Big 12 and all-region performer Brande Brown will suit up for the United States.
Sixteen players, all college seniors or older, from the United States will be divided into two teams of eight with Nelson serving as head coach of one and UNLV's Dietrich Collins the other. The teams will arrive in Munich, Germany, Wed., May 8, for two days of practice and move on to Trieste, Italy, for a final workout prior to the start of the event.
The Spring Cup, considered the premier European tournament for national B-teams, will be divided into four pools of four teams. In addition to the two USA squads, teams from Croatia, Slovenia, Sweden, Spain, England, Denmark, Azerbijan, Turkey, Austria, Greece, Finland, Israel, France and Italy.
