LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2002 volleyball schedule was finalized Thursday morning and will have the Red Raiders making non-conference stops in Hempstead, N.Y., and Las Vegas, Nev., before the Sept. 13th home opener versus Clemson in the Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic.
Last season Texas Tech was 18-14 overall and its 9-11 record in Big 12 play tied it for sixth place. The Red Raiders also earned a second consecutive bid the NCAA Tournament, which marked the fifth time that Tech has participated in postseason play under head coach Jeff Nelson.
The 2002 season will begin with the Hofstra/Asics Classic on August 30th in Hempstead, N.Y., when Tech will play Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. Matches with Kentucky and tournament host Hofstra will conclude the season-opening tournament before the Red Raiders head to Nevada for the UNLV/Gameworks Classic, Sept. 6-8.
While in Las Vegas, Nev., the Red Raiders will do battle with Ball State, Cal, and UNLV.
The 15th annual Red Raider Classic will open the home schedule, as Clemson and Arizona State will be in town Sept. 13-15.
A single home match with New Mexico State on Sept. 17th will serve as a final tune-up before Tech opens conference play on Sept. 21st with the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa.
All total, Tech is scheduled to play 29 matches including 13 home contests against teams such as Texas, Texas A&M, Nebraska and Arizona State.
"The level of play is going to go up again significantly this year and hopefully that will create an even better atmosphere," commented Nelson on this year's schedule. "Here in Lubbock, we have the best facility in the country to play volleyball in. We have a great team in a great conference where any night you can see a great match. We really are going to work hard to get the people out this season and break some attendance records."
Tickets can be purchased through the Texas Tech ticket office at 742-TECH.
