LUBBOCK, Texas - Twelve former Red Raider football players enter NFL preseason training camps this week, led by All-Pro linebacker Zach Thomas and former Red Raider All-Americans Marcus Coleman (Houston Texans), Byron Hanspard (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and Montae Reagor (Denver Broncos).
Sammy Morris begins his third training camp with Buffalo, while Anthony Malbrough starts his second NFL season with the Texans, a year after suiting up for Barcelona in NFL Europe. Others with professional experience include Zebbie Lethridge, who is in his second season with Miami, and Kris Kocurek, who is in his second season with the Tennessee Titans. Tim Baker spent last season as a free agent with Pittsburgh and appeared in three games, before signing a free agent contract with the Carolina Panthers during the offseason. Derek Dorris is a first-year free agent with the New York Giants, following his rookie season in New Orleans.
Kevin Curtis and Ricky Williams, Texas Tech's rookies in the league this season, begin their professional careers in San Francisco and New Orleans. Curtis was a fourth-round pick of the 49ers in the 2002 draft, while Williams signed a free agent contract with the Saints.
