Kliff Kingsbury Chat Wrap
July 30, 2002 | Football
Kliff Kingsbury: I am here and ready to go!
Tim, College Station: Do you think that Texas Tech will be able to get to the Big 12 Champ. game and if not what are your goals as a team and as a QB?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think we have the talent. We have a tough schedule so we have to start strong. But we have the talent, we just have to make the plays.
Ryan (Houston): Good luck on the upcoming season! You have a pretty young offensive line to block for you, but a couple could turn into pro-prospects, especially the Loper kid from Houston. Are you comfortable with your line? Thanks
Kliff Kingsbury: Very comfortable. We don't have much depth but the starters are great. If we stay healthy we will be in good shape.
New Braunfels: what is the 79 on your wrist for?
Kliff Kingsbury: It's for one of my teammates from high school who was killed.
Chris Mayes, Austin, TX: In your opinion who will be the tougher team you face this year, Oklahoma or Texas?
Kliff Kingsbury: They will both be tough. Those are the two teams at the top right now. They are both loaded with talent.
Hank, Tulsa: Hey Kliff, who will fill the shoes left by Ricky Williams? Has any of the RB's caught your eye this off season? Thanks and good luck !!! Tech '96
Kliff Kingsbury: Yes. We have four young guys who are all figuring out the system. I don't know who will be the man yet but they are all capable of doing that.
Bret Barnett, Lubbock: Hey Kliff:
Enjoyed meeting you at the autograph session at Jones SBC Stadium. What do you feel the Red Raiders need to improve upon from last year to reach your goals this year?? Good luck this year, go get 'em.....
Kliff Kingsbury: Offensively just being more consistent. Last year we scored a lot of points in some games but not many in others. We just need to be more consistent.
Matthew (Lubbock): Your name has been mentioned for the Heisman, but is overshadowed by Ken Dorsey, Rex Grossman and Chris Simms,do you see this as an incentive to prove yourself, or is it something that you really try no to think or worry about?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think it's motivation .. they are all in great, storied programs and have won some great games. We have to win those games to get that respect. So it's is definitly motivation.
lubbock: you often get hit pretty hard when you drop back in the pocket do you think that pro coaches and scouts consider your toughness when looking at you as a prospect, and do you think this is one of you stronger attributes?
Kliff Kingsbury: I hope so. That is one thing I have always tried to never show people when I am hurt. Football is too fun to be sitting on the sidelines so I try to stay in there.
Matt (Huntsville): Kliff, everybody knows you are the cornerstone of our offense, who do you see as your pedecessor to step up take control after you graduate?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think B.J. Simmons has always done a great job. And we have more younger guys after him. But B.J. will be the man next year.
Ben (Baton Rouge): What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Kliff Kingsbury: Cherry Vanilla.
Lincoln: Can you outrun Colorado's defense?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think we will be able to throw it around. We will put it up and see what happens.
Cisco, TX: Mr. Kingsbury, I am a young aspiring football coach in Cisco, Texas. But I really want to know what is the funniest moment on the Tech practice field in your time there?
Kliff Kingsbury: That's one thing about around here .. it's very laid back and fun. There are always pranks being pulled. I try to stay out of it. Usually it's me that initiates it.
Roger (New Orleans): What is the key to torching the Nebraska defense like you guys did last year?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think we just have some good receivers. They tried to man up with us and that is very tough to do.
Don (Pearland, TX): Kliff,
The Red Raiders have a tougher schedule this year than since you've been at Tech. There are no bye weeks and you play 13 straight weeks before that bowl game I expect to see you perform in. What has Coach Leach done to prepare you and the rest of the team for the rigorous schedule that lays ahead of you?
Kliff Kingsbury: Pretty much all the same things we have been doing. We are polishing up our system and working on the little things. We will be prepared.
Sethney 99' (Dallas): Do you have some new plays in the book? Will we see more down field passing?
Kliff Kingsbury: Yeah, we put in some new wrinkles. Defenses weren't giving us the deep ball last year but we are going to force the issue and go downfield more.
Jana, Lubbock: What do you feel is Techs greatest advantage over its opponents this season and where do you see yourself in a year?
Kliff Kingsbury: Offensively just the amount of quality receivers we have .. we have 5 or 6 guys who can make big plays and a lot of teams don't have that.
Nick Henry,Columbus: How do you plan on having an effective passing game on Ohio State, with them having one of the highly regarded defenses led by big ten defensive player of the year?
Kliff Kingsbury: Yeah, that will be a great challenge. They are so good up front but inexperienced at the corners. They are a great defense so it will be intersting to see what happens.
Duck: Kliff: Texans or Cowboys?
Kliff Kingsbury: I'm a Packers fan so none of the above!! I'm a big Brett Favre fan.
Bob Fisher, albuquerque: I really like the fact the you guys are airing it out down there in Lubbock, but don't you feel that by esablishing more of a running game you will open up the offense a bit more?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think we will try. We've tried the last couple years but haven't got much going. But we will certainly try to get the run game going.
Nina, Lubbock: Kliff - I know you enjoyed playing NCAA Football 2002 on Playstation2 last year... have you played the 2003 version yet? :) It is really exciting to hear our own school song on a video game!
Kliff Kingsbury: No I haven't. But all my roomates have and they are pretty good.
Matthew: Kliff, me being a husker fan, this is hard to say, but i believe you are the best Qb in the Big12, if not nation! Awesome job! Well how do you think you will fair in a tough big 12 this year?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think we will do very well. We have as much talent as anyone on offense so we just have to stay healthy. We have a chance to make some waves.
Derek (Dallas): Hey Kliff What is your favorite resturant in Lubbock?
Kliff Kingsbury: I like Cap Rock Cafe.
Mack (Cut-n-Shoot): Kliff - Can you tell me your physical stats this year? Did the PnB Sammiches add more padding?
Kliff Kingsbury: I'm about 210. I stayed the same weight but I'm very healthy and ready to go!
Bryan (lubbock): What is it like to grow up being a coachs son? Do you think that it had a greater affect on your skills than if you were just a player?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think so. It really helped being around the game and always being at games. It just rubs off on you.
Cal(elk mound): What would it be like to be drafted by the packers?
Kliff Kingsbury: I don't know about Green Bay! But yeah, playing under Favre would be awesome.
Sethney 99' (Dallas): who is going to be your go to guy? are there any impact new comers at reciever? good luck this season BEAT TX!
Kliff Kingsbury: Pretty much whoever is open. We have so much talent, I just want to get the ball to the open guy and let him make the plays.
c.j. College Station: Hey Kliff even though I am a diehard aggie I am very impressed with your talent, wish you had come to A&M. What stadium is the toughest to play at?
Kliff Kingsbury: I would say probably A&M or Texas. Those places are always rockin'.
Jake (New Orleans): Please don't be PC on this: I want your actual prediction on this year's Red Raider outcome!
Kliff Kingsbury: I'm not going to say an exact outcome! But this is byfar the best team I have played on. So take that for what it is worth!
Cory Redding (Austin): I want to sack you. Who's the scariest lineman you've ever faced?
Kliff Kingsbury: Good question.. probably Aaron Humphries from Texas. There are so many good ones in the Big 12.
David, New Jersey: What has changed the most for Texas Tech from last season to this season?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think the conference last year, we went in hoping we would win some games and this year we feel we can win them all. So I would say our attitude.
AJ - Austin: I am really excited about the 6'8" Hawkins. Are we going to see much of him? If so, will it be only in goal line situations or typ. sets?
Kliff Kingsbury: Yeah, we are trying to figure out what to do with him. We will use him in certain situations. He has really improved a lot.
Nick (Philadelphia): would a 9-4 (5-3) regular season and a Cotton bowl berth be an accomplishment for you, or is that an expectation this year?
Kliff Kingsbury: I think that is an expectation with this team. With as much talent as we have, that would be a minimum. It's too early to tell but we feel we have a chance to do great things.
Thanks for all the questions .. I hope to see all you guys out at the games this year. Take care.
