LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior offensive guard Rex Richards (Midland, Texas) was named to the 2002 Outland Trophy Watch List today by the Football Writers Association of America. There were 63 players named to the list.
Richards is the lone senior among the offensive line starters this season for the Red Raiders and leads all returning players with 31 career starts, dating back to his freshman season. Entering the 2002 campaign, Richards ranks 20th among the nation's returning linemen in career starts.
The Outland Trophy has been presented annually since 1946 and is the third oldest award in major college football. The award is named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn during the turn of the 20th century.
Tennessee's John Henderson won the award in 2001.
