SYRACUSE, New York - The Texas Tech soccer team started 2-0 for the first time since 1996 as it defeated Syracuse 3-1 this afternoon in Syracuse, New York, on the final day of the Syracuse Orange Classic.
Sophomore Micheala Roberts (San Antonio, Texas) put Tech (2-0-0) on top in the first half, as she converted a long crossing pass from midfielder Kerri Campbell (Duncanville, Texas) to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.
Syracuse (0-1-1) got on the board in the 61st minute as Stephanie Sybert spilt the Tech defense and beat goalkeeper Lindsay Fish (Dallas, Texas) one-on-one to tie the score at 1-1. Tech suffered another blow on the play as Fish was injured as she collided with teammate Tiana Boyea (Plano, Texas) and suffered a broken nose. Head Coach Felix Oskam said Fish would be re-evaluated when the team returns to Lubbock.
With the score knotted at 1-1, freshman Beth Lippert (Woodinville, Washington) entered the game in relief of Fish. In the 71st minute, it was Campbell who put the Red Raiders in the lead for good as she unleashed a shot from the right side, which beat the keeper high to the far post. Under a minute later, Roxanne Frilot (Albuquerque, New Mexico) scored an insurance goal on a direct kick to give Tech a 3-1 lead.
Lippert finished with nine saves and recorded the first win of her collegiate career. Tech's defense forced the Orangewomen offside nine times in the match. Campbell recorded three points on the day giving her four points in just two games played this season.
Tech will face Southwest Texas in its home opener on Friday, Sept. 6th, at 7 p.m. at R. P. Fuller Stadium.
