LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider volleyball team will close out its three match home stand Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when the New Mexico State Aggies come to town. The Red Raiders have gone 1-1 thus far, defeating the Clemson Tigers, 3-1, in the opening match of the Four Point Sheraton/Red Raider Classic before falling, 3-2, to the Arizona State Sun Devils in the championship match.
Tech (4-4) is led offensively by senior Melissa McGehee and sophomore Kelly Johnson. McGehee has recorded 118 kills this season and is just 23 shy of tying Brande Brown (1994-97) for the all-time kills record at Tech. Over the weekend she recorded her third and fourth double-doubles of the season. Johnson leads the team in total kills with 126 and also leads the team with 11 service aces.
Sophomore Jessy Herrera leads the Red Raiders in digs with 112, while senior Stacey Poole's 21 blocks is tops on the team. As a team, Tech is holding its opponents to just a .175 hitting percentage.
Tuesday's match will be the final non-conference match for the Red Raiders who begin Big 12 Conference action Saturday night in Ames, Iowa, with the Cyclones. With a 3-1 win over the Tigers Friday night the Texas Tech volleyball program achieved its 249 home win and will look to make the Aggies No. 250.
