DALLAS, Texas - Melissa McGehee was named the first Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week of the 2002 season the Big 12 Conference announced Monday.
McGehee (Kerrville, Texas) led the Red Raiders with a match-high 15 kills on a .583 hitting percentage in the school's first-ever win over Kentucky (3-0) last Saturday. The win was also a historic one for McGehee as she eclipsed the 1,000 digs mark and moved into sixth on the Tech all-time career kills list.
In McGehee's first weekend of action, she helped the Red Raiders defeat Fairfield, Kentucky and tournament host Hofstra to claim the Hofstra/Asics Classic title. The 2001 first-team Academic All-Big 12 team selection and All-Big 12 honorable mention averaged 14.33 kills per match and a tournament-high .589 hitting percentage. McGehee also tallied 43 kills with only three errors on the weekend. For her efforts, she was named tournament Most Valuable Player.
This marks the first time since Sept. 27, 2000 when Janelle Jones was named Big 12 Player of the week that a Red Raider has earned this honor.
Texas Tech is 3-0 overall this season. The Red Raiders will travel to Las Vegas to take on Ball State at the UNLV/Gameworks Classic on Friday.
