Lubbock, Texas - The 2003 Lady Raider softball squad will swing into action Friday morning at 11 a.m., when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Bobcat Field in San Marcos, Texas. The field also includes Oregon, Southwest Texas, Houston and Arkansas.
This year's squad will see the return of ten lettermen including Esmerelda Perez and Kristi Robles, who were offensive leaders in five and eight categories, respectively. Tech's returns Kristina Blair and Amie Stines, who will once again lead the Raiders in the pitching circle.
Tech will see six new faces, three with high school experience and three transfers. Junior Elyssa Sigala will join her former West Valley Junior College teammates Robles and Perez and see time as catcher for the Lady Raiders. New Mexico State transfer Kelly Rhyne and freshman Arlene Newton are among the newcomers who are expected to make an immediate impact on the team.
Two more new faces include assistant coaches Dave Feinberg and Debby Abbott, both bringing a wealth of experience. Feinberg is looking to this weekend's tournament as a measuring stick for success.
"We, like everybody else, are tired of practicing against each other and are really anxious to play," said Feinberg. "We are looking forward to seeing how much our hard work this fall has paid off."
In 2002 the squad finished 3-2 at the classic with a big win over #17 SWT, 13-6. Tech split with Oregon, 2-7 and 9-1, and handed Texas A&M-C.C. a 8-5 loss. Tech's other loss came against Houston, 4-6.
The SWT/Century Tell Bobcat Classic will run through Sunday.
