LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team held its first practice of 2003 this morning at 9 a.m. in the Athletic Training Center as the team prepares for the upcoming season which is now just days away.
The Red Raiders welcomed a total of 20 new players today and all hope to compete for several starting positions that opened after last season. The team returns all three pitchers from last year's weekend rotation and two starting outfielders.
"It was great to get out here today and finally get this season underway," said senior pitcher Nathan Fouts. "This team has great talent and we already have good team chemistry so we think only good things will happen. Those of us who were here last year didn't like the early exit from the NCAA Tournament so we hope to improve from that and so something special."
Texas Tech finished the 2002 season with a record of 42-20 and finished in a second place tie in the Big 12 regular-season with a mark of 16-11. The Red Raiders will hold an intra-squad scrimmage at 1 p.m. today at Dan Law Field and will continue two-a-day workouts until schools begins on Jan. 15. All practices are open to the public.
