Welker Named Big 12 Player of the Week

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior PR Wes Welker (Oklahoma City, Okla./Heritage Hall) was named SBC Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Week Monday, after breaking the NCAA record for career punt returns for touchdown with his eighth in Saturday's win over Colorado.
Welker set the record in the second quarter with a 58 yard return, initially breaking two tackles and following solid blocks en route to the end zone. He also snapped Donny Anderson's 38-year-old school record for career all-purpose yards on the return and has 5,295 for his career. Welker leads the team with 68 receptions, has 826 yards and is averaging 12.1 yards per catch. He also is tied with three other teammates with seven touchdown receptions.
Welker ranks 20th this season among NCAA punt return men with 12.6 yards per returns and is tied second nationally with two punt returns for touchdowns.
Welker and the Red Raiders are 6-3 on the season and continue Big 12 Conference play Saturday at Baylor at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco, Texas. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (CT).
