RED RAIDERS CONCLUDE HOMESTAND WITH INSTATE RIVAL TCU
The TCU Horned Frogs come to Lubbock on Tuesday to face No. 22 Texas Tech in a 3 p.m. match-up at Dan Law Field. The game with TCU will wrap-up what has been an 11-game homestand for Texas Tech. Texas Tech enters the game with an overall record of 8-2 while TCU comes to town with a 6-2 overall mark.
Texas Tech won two-out-three this past weekend against a scrappy San Francisco club. Tech scored a one-run win (10-9) on Friday, a 16-10 win on Saturday before falling 8-5 to the Dons in the final game on Sunday.
Following Tuesday's game, the Red Raiders will make the trip over to Fort Worth where they will take on TCU in a three-game series at the new Lupton Stadium on the Texas Christian University campus. A few limited tickets are available and can be purchased through the TCU Athletic Ticket Office at (817) 257-FROG.
The Texas Tech Athletics Department will sponsor a special ticket promotion for Tuesday's game with TCU as it will be "Two For Tuesday" meaning fans will get two tickets for the price of one. For more information, please call the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket Office at 742-TECH.
BRIEFLY
- Texas Tech extended its home non-conference streak this past weekend with a 2-1 series win over San Francisco. Texas Tech has not lost a home non-conference series since 1989 as Tech has won 72 series and split 10.
- Texas Tech's 8-2 start to the 2003 season is the program's best start since the 1998 season when Tech also went 8-2 to open the year.
- The Red Raiders continue to lead the Big 12 in hitting as the team is batting .375 on the year. Baylor comes in at second as the Bears are hitting .345. Tech also leads the league with a .984 fielding percentage.
- The Texas Tech offense is averaging 13.4 hits per game to go along with 10.2 runs per game. Defensively, Tech averages 10.6 assists per game and one error every 15 innings. The Red Raiders have rattled off two 30+ errorless innings this season.
A LOOK AT TCU
The TCU Horned Frogs come to Lubbock on Tuesday for a single game against the Red Raiders. TCU owns a 6-2 overall record after going 2-1 this past weekend against Southeastern Louisiana. TCU's only other loss came in the season opener against UTA as the Mavericks won 5-3, spoiling the Lupton Stadium opener for the Frogs.
Offensively, TCU is hitting .314 as a team and has added to their attack with 24 stolen bases on 27 attempts. Third baseman Mike Settle leads the attack for TCU as he is batting .464 on the young season with four doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI.
On the hill, TCU has a 3.05 ERA through 65 innings along with 59 strikeouts and 25 walks. Chris Osentowski has been the workhorse of the staff totaling a 3.68 ERA and a 1-1 record through 14 2/3 innings of work.
ON DECK
Texas Tech will travel to Fort Worth this weekend for a three-game series with TCU. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday night at the new Lupton Stadium on the Texas Christian University campus. The series continues at 3:30 on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Texas Tech will return home late Sunday and prepare for a two-game series with Texas-Pan American beginning on Wednesday at Dan Law Field.
RED RAIDERS JUMP INTO NATIONAL RANKINGS
Texas Tech picked up its first national ranking of the 2003 season as the Red Raiders debuted at No. 22 in the Sports Weekly/ESPN Top 25 Baseball Coaches Poll. The poll was released on Monday, Feb. 17.
Texas Tech joins Oklahoma and Texas as one of just three schools to have all four major sports programs (Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball and Baseball) ranked in the Top 25 during the 2002-03 academic year. Among the Sports Weekly/ESPN poll, Tech joins Texas, Notre Dame and LSU as one of just four schools to accomplish the feat.
RED RAIDERS LOOK TO MOVE WIN STREAK TO 10 GAMES
After winning all six games against TCU in 2002, the Red Raiders were finally able to even up the all-time series between Texas Tech and TCU. Both Texas Tech and TCU have now won 63 games each in the series that dates back to 1957. Tech is currently riding a nine-game win streak that dates back to the 2001 season. The last TCU win in the series came back on March 28, 2000, when the Frogs took a 7-5 decision at Dan Law Field.
MCGILL PUSHES HIT STREAK TO 10 GAMES
Junior third baseman Clint McGill extended his team-leading hit streak to 10 games thanks to a two-hit day against San Francisco on Sunday. McGill is currently batting .406 on the year along with three doubles and five RBI.
SOLID D-FENCE
The Texas Tech infield committed its first error of the season against San Francisco in the second game of the series on Feb. 15. As a team, Texas Tech is fielding at .984 which is tops in the Big 12.
