HOUSTON, Texas - After a long anticipated day of waiting for the rain to stop, Texas Tech softball took on the University of San Antonio in Houston, Texas at the Houston Invitational to a 4-2 finish. Play was cancelled yesterday due to severe rain.
Tech allowed one hit in the first with Amie Stines taking her spot on the mound. UTSA would land a man on third but a double play by Shayne Gipson, who recorded four putouts and five assists, and Andrea Joachims, logging eight putouts, kept the Roadrunners off the board.
In the third with one man on base, Jessica Rogers slammed a homerun over right center field to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 edge. Two putouts by Gipson foiled an UTSA scoring run and sent the teams into inning four.
A drive by Kristi Robles, who was 1-for-3 against UTSA, fell short of clearing the wall but gave Robles a double and sent Tiffany Harrington home, on base after a single. In the next inning and first at bat, Elyssa Sigala, in her sole hit of two at-bats, hit a drive to left center field for her fifth double of the year. Kelly Rhyne was next up at the plate hitting a line drive down the right line to push Sigala around to third. However a triple play turned by San Antonio would hold the Lady Raiders in a 2-1 campaign going into the fifth.
In the fifth, Perez gunned in two balls from outfield to hold the Roadrunners on base. With bases loaded and one out against her, Erin Crawford came in at the top of the fifth to relieve Stines, who faced 21 batters in 4.1 innings. UTSA would get one run off a single by Heather Polhamus but throw outs to home and first by Robles ended the Roadrunners half of the inning. In her second at bat of the season, Douglas hammered one over left center field for her fourth homerun of the season.
In the seventh, Crawford, who pitched 2.2 innings and gave up one earned run, struck out two but a double by Jessica Els would be turned into a run with the Roadrunners leading the Lady Raiders 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Tech (6-12) could not get the bats swinging and fell 4-2 to the Roadrunners.
