HOUSTON, Texas - In its final day of competition the Lady Raider softball team handed host Houston a 6-5 loss at the Houston Invitational. This was the second meeting for the squads, the first being a 4-2 Tech victory at the SWT/Century Tel Classic in San Marcos, Texas.
Tech softball would kick it off in the first beginning with a double by Esmerelda Perez, who was 1-for-4 on the day. A throwing error by the first baseman allowed Perez to advance home putting Tech on the board. Tech, with Erin Crawford on the mound, allowed no hits in the first.
In the second, Amanda Douglas hit a fly to left field, which would be caught and dropped by the Cougar left fielder. Joachims singled between shortstop and third to score Douglas. Tech concluded its half of the inning with ones all across the board. Houston would get on the board with a home run by Jenilee Skender in the second over right center field.
At the top of the third, Shayne Gipson and Elyssa Sigala hit strong singles to land on base when Rhyne came up to the plate, to slam her fourth home run of the season. Tech headed into the bottom of the third 5-1 but would allow one Cougar run.
In the fourth Robles slammed a homerun over left center field, her sixth of the season to give Tech a 6-2 lead. Two runs in the fifth off singles by Arelis Ferreris and Kristen Glowacz brought a pitching change with Kristina Blair coming in to relieve Crawford. Crawford pitched 4.1 innings and is now 3-3. The Cougars scored one more run in the fifth to cut down Tech's lead to 6-5 leading into the sixth.
In the seventh, the Cougars entered at the top of their order. Amie Stines came in to close the game after Houston's Jeanie Davis slammed a double that fell short of the wall. Blair finished the game after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing no runs. With two outs and a players on first and third, Stines secured a Tech victory by striking out Skender handing the Cougars a 6-5 loss.
Tech (8-13) will have a home field advantage this weekend when it hosts New Mexico State University, Tue., for a double-header beginning at 2 pm.
