LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech claimed it first title of the spring golf season after freezing temperatures and winter weather forced the cancellation of the final two rounds of the UTSA Invitational in San Antonio.
The Red Raiders finished with a two-shot lead after the first round Monday, fighting not only the rest of the field, but driving winds and intermittent sleet.
"Considering the conditions, I thought we played well," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We're used to the wind, but we faced sleet and gusts up to 30. I challenged the guys yesterday and they responded well."
Texas Tech placed two golfers in the top 10, led by Andrew Dresser (Carrollton, Texas/Creekview) in a second-place tie with a 2-over 73. Brooks Kelly (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) tied in fifth place with a 74. Brad Jacobson (Bryant, S.D./Hamlin) and Erik Stenman (Tampere, Finland) finished in a tie for 13th and 19th place with rounds of 76 and 77, respectively, while Mark Hull (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) closed out the scoring for Tech with an 80 and a 47th place tie.
The 52nd-ranked Red Raiders shot a 300 to finish atop the 15-team field, which included No. 21 Arkansas (302 in 2nd) and No. 32 Baylor (309 in a tie for 6th). North Texas and Kansas State tied in third (305), followed by Iowa State (307) in fifth. Wichita State tied with Baylor, while Arkansas-Little Rock (311), Rice (312) and host Texas-San Antonio (313) finished eighth through tenth.
Illinois State (316) and Louisiana-Lafayette (316) tied in the 11th position and Stephen F. Austin (325), Northern Iowa (330) and the German National Team (335) finished 13th through 15th.
