PHOENIX, ARIZ - In the second day of competition at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., the Lady Raiders lost 2-5 to the Massachusetts Minutewomen. The Lady Raiders got their bats swinging at the top of the first with the first two batters earning hits and two more making it on base by way of fielder's choice. However, they were not able to capitalize on these hits for a win.
The Minutemen did not hesitate to strike back as Brandy Cross hit a two run homerun at the bottom of the first, her second of the day. The Minutewomen would score another run in the second, leaving the score at 3-0 heading into the third.
Tech would earn their first run off a fielder's choice by Amanda Douglas, with Kristi Robles (2-4) making it home after hitting a single to get on base.
Massachusetts scored in the bottom of the third leading to a Tech pitching change with Kristina Blair relieving Erin Crawford (1-2). Tech's freshman pitcher threw three innings and gave up two earned runs. Blair would strike out one and with the Tech defense would hold the Minutewomen scoreless for the first time in the game.
The U. Mass bats would strike again in the fifth leaving Tech in a 5-1 deficit heading into the seventh.
The seventh saw a strong effort by the Raiders but it was not enough to fend off the Minutewomen. Tiffany Harrington would hit a single to get the team on base. A sacrifice bunt by Shayne Gipson would put Harrington in prime position to score. A single by Robles would send Harrington home, leaving the score 5-2. A pop up to shortstop by Douglas would conclude play for the Lady Raiders (2-6).
